Migrants not able to sue for appeal.
In a 7-2 vote on Thursday, the Supreme Court decided that immigrants in fast-tracked asylum proceedings whose claims have been denied early in the process do not have the right to sue the federal court to appeal the decision.
The nation’s high court determined that asylum-seekers were not entitled to habeas corpus, which would have given them recourse to protest an expedited deportation.
The Court’s opinion was written by Associate Justice Samuel Alito. Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan were the lone dissenters.
The decision will affect as many as 9,000 asylum seekers who made claims after illegally entering the United States.
